At Sowa Charana, our mission is to be a bridge between Amazonian shamanic healing traditions and our modern world.
With a combined 15 years of experience working with curanderos from the Shipibio-Konibo indigenous group—as their translators, helpers, ceremony facilitators, and as their patients—our team has cultivated a deep understanding of and a profound respect for the Shipibo tradition of ayahuasca-based healing and the myriad jungle plants used therein. The indigenous healers who lead our ceremonies have been doing this work for decades. Both in and out of ceremony, they work from a place of utmost dedication, integrity, sensitivity, and love.
For centuries, if not millennia, curanderas and curanderos like those we work with have served the communities of the Amazon Basin using ayahuasca and the rich pharmacy of the jungle to heal the ailments they encountered in their communities. Today, alongside all the nice new advancements its made in technology and culture, our modern society has produced a plethora of brand new ailments specific to our time. From autoimmune diseases to mental health epidemics to the widespread soul-malaise that comes with a life lived in disconnection from nature, these contemporary health issues require treatments as diverse as the post-globalization society that gave rise to them.
If one were to try and reduce the complex Shipibo healing tradition down to one simple ethos, it could be expressed as this: within each human being lives a shining, healthy soul, ready to thrive; it is only kept from doing so by traumas, illnesses, and unhelpful energies that simply need to be cleaned off of it so its light can shine through.
“Sowa” is the Shipibo word for this sort of cleaning.
And “charana” is both a Sanskrit word that means “wanderer” and a name given to a 12th century South-Indian religious sect that wandered the land, eschewing the idea of a fixed temple or sacred home-base while welcoming worshipers of all classes and cultures into the fold. In one of his teachings, the founding saint of the Charanas referred to their deity as the “Lord of the meeting rivers.”
Thus, as Sowa Charana—a wandering ayahuasca retreat facilitated by lifelong travelers at locations around the globe—we seek to offer the most authentic experience of the Shipibo healing tradition possible, while at the same time placing it in a modern container that can best serve guests of all backgrounds. As the movable point where the river of ancient Shipibo knowledge meets the diverse cultural rivers that carry our guests to us, ours is a necessarily syncretic modality that, in our many years of experience with hundreds of guests, we’ve seen simply works.
In addition to providing a contemporary context for traditional medicine to effectively treat the illnesses of today, our goal is to help guests fall back into the kind of reciprocal relationship with nature practiced by all of our ancestors. At retreat centers all over the world, we invite guests to build their own relationships of gratitude, respect, and reverence for the natural world, a practice that in and of itself is a path to healing, as well as a powerful and, sadly, largely-forgotten pillar of indigenous wisdom.
We are an ayahuasca retreat with a fluid center. A bridge between the timeless and the timely. A place where rivers meet, and in their meeting, clean, rejuvenate, and heal.

December 17, 2025 at 3:02 pmIf you’re reading this, consider your search complete! I don’t think there’s a better retreat out there for actually doing spiritual, energetic work on a deep level. These beautiful people are doing some real serious work. They are the real deal! I had been searching on and off for over a decade, looking for the right retreat center, and finally took a leap of faith after visiting their website.
I just could not have asked for a better experience. Ben, Brit, Kevin and Lydia are truly walking the path. They made us feel safe, cared for, and made us feel important. We were so well-fed, well-informed and guided through this work.
I received everything I wanted from the ceremonies, and so much more that I wasn’t expecting. Lydia is so knowledgeable, powerful, caring. She not only helped me become free from my traumas, my depression and anxiety, she also fixed a problem in my neck and lower back that had been bothering me for years!
Ben, Brit and Kevin really took time to talk to me, sort out my problems, focus on what needs to change in my life, and genuinely made me feel loved. We also had plenty of time to just have normal conversations, laugh together and have fun. They answered every question we had and made us feel like we are in good hands. They’re just genuinely good people, and want to help you!
Thank you, Sowa Charana! My life is forever changed for the better thanks to you all.

December 4, 2025 at 3:00 pmSowa Charana and their entire team are phenomenal. I could not have picked a better retreat center for my first ayahuasca experience. I attended their November 2025 retreat in the Sacred Valley, it was 6 days/5 nights with 3 ceremonies. They are the real deal. Safety, support, and authenticity were my top priorities when picking a retreat, and they absolutely crushed it. I have zero complaints at all with the experience and the space they all so carefully curated.
The curandero(s) were so incredibly kind, healing, and grounded. They kept the ceremony so safe the entire time, and sung the most beautiful icaros. It is very evident that they have been doing this all their lives and are masters of their craft. The facilitators have so much combined experience with ceremonies and they prioritize their guests by making sure they feel safe, tended-to, and heard. I never had to question whether they were listening to me when we would have one-on-one talks to prep for or integrate a ceremony. I always felt so deeply heard in such a way that helped me know that what I was coming to work on was not out of reach or “too much” to handle. Everyone there has so much grounded wisdom to share in their own uniqueness that is truly helpful in a way that is beneficial to your healing, not in a way that is spiritually bypassing or appropriating.
The structure of the retreat had just the right amount of balance between rest, integration/prep talks (both group settings and one-on-one), and activities (breathwork, yoga, plant dietas/plant baths). I never felt like my experience was directed or influenced by anyone, they really know how to let the magic of ayahuasca work with you and allow it to flow as a truly self-directed experience, and help you to learn what it means to be in a reciprocal relationship with the medicine and the experience as a whole.
The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and beautiful. The food was healthy and prepared with so much love. What really was awesome was this retreat had returning guests (an amazing sign!) and even family members drinking with them. What a deep level of trust this team has built with their guests! If you are looking for a retreat that has authentic and grounded people, and a truly healing medicine experience, Sowa Charana is who you want to drink with. Whenever I feel the call again, I will certainly be back 🙂

August 6, 2025 at 10:21 amI recently completed a 2 week ayahuasca retreat with Sowa Charana and it was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life.
The level of care they provide is unmatched. I’ve done ayahuasca with 4 other groups before, and this was by far the best group of facilitators and guests I’ve been apart of. Kevin, Britt, Ben, Lou, and Lidia are some of the best in the business and will help guide you every step of the way.
If you are looking for a place that helps you feel comfortable and holds some of the best space for genuine, deep medicine work, I can’t recommend Sowa Charana enough.

August 3, 2025 at 5:18 pmThe best.
Cannot recommend them any higher. Brit, Ben, Kevin and Drew are all incredible facilitators and equally incredible people. This is my second retreat in total and first with them, but it certainly won’t be the last.
I felt safe, cared for and guided the entire time. Whether it’s your first retreat or your 100th, there’s nobody else you should consider.
Follow-up involves 2 integration calls, and all facilitators are only a text on WhatsApp away.
Again, amazing retreats run by amazing people.
When it’s time to sit with the medicine again, there’s nowhere else I’ll go.

August 3, 2025 at 4:14 pmMy experience at Sowa Charana was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely supported and seen. The level of care, love, and intentionality that the team brings to every aspect of this journey is rare and deeply moving.
The property is stunning—nestled in the Amazon, beautifully maintained, peaceful, and alive with sacred energy. Every detail, from the cleanliness to the design of the spaces, supports deep healing and reflection.
What truly makes Sowa Charana exceptional is the communication and synergy between the facilitators and the curanderos. There’s a deep respect and harmony that flows between them, which you can feel in every ceremony, conversation, and moment of stillness. This container is held with reverence, safety, and profound devotion.
Both curranderos and facilitators created safe, welcoming spaces for us to share our most vulnerable and mystical experiences—never rushed, never judged. Their presence was steady, loving, and always attuned to the needs of the group.
Each person in this container holds a special and irreplaceable role:
Lidia, the curandera, is pure ancestral medicine—her icaros, prayers, and presence opened doors in my soul that I didn’t even know existed. Her work is beyond words—deeply spiritual and transformative.
Ben is a true guardian—steady, grounded, and committed to every soul’s healing.
Kevin brings deep wisdom and a calm, stabilizing energy that anchors the entire space.
Brittany is a radiant light—compassionate, intuitive, and deeply in tune with everyone’s emotional journey.
Drew is a beam of grounded light—equal parts wisdom, warmth, and heart. His presence reminds you to breathe deeper, trust more, and remember the beauty in the process.”
Together, they create a container that is thorough, loving, professional, and deeply sacred. Every step of the journey—from the ceremonies to integration to simple daily moments—was held with intention and care. Thank you also for making plenty of time to laugh with all of us as well.
If you are considering this path, know that Sowa Charana is the real deal. It’s not just a retreat—it’s a homecoming to your true self, guided by people who genuinely care. It was one of the most important experiences of my life, and I will carry it with me forever.
Thank you, Sowa Charana.
