Sowa Charana Ayahuasca Retreats

Pucallpa, Cusco, Peru

At Sowa Charana, our mission is to be a bridge between Amazonian shamanic healing traditions and our modern world.
With a combined 15 years of experience working with curanderos from the Shipibio-Konibo indigenous group—as their translators, helpers, ceremony facilitators, and as their patients—our team has cultivated a deep understanding of and a profound respect for the Shipibo tradition of ayahuasca-based healing and the myriad jungle plants used therein. The indigenous healers who lead our ceremonies have been doing this work for decades. Both in and out of ceremony, they work from a place of utmost dedication, integrity, sensitivity, and love.

For centuries, if not millennia, curanderas and curanderos like those we work with have served the communities of the Amazon Basin using ayahuasca and the rich pharmacy of the jungle to heal the ailments they encountered in their communities. Today, alongside all the nice new advancements its made in technology and culture, our modern society has produced a plethora of brand new ailments specific to our time. From autoimmune diseases to mental health epidemics to the widespread soul-malaise that comes with a life lived in disconnection from nature, these contemporary health issues require treatments as diverse as the post-globalization society that gave rise to them.

If one were to try and reduce the complex Shipibo healing tradition down to one simple ethos, it could be expressed as this: within each human being lives a shining, healthy soul, ready to thrive; it is only kept from doing so by traumas, illnesses, and unhelpful energies that simply need to be cleaned off of it so its light can shine through.

“Sowa” is the Shipibo word for this sort of cleaning.

And “charana” is both a Sanskrit word that means “wanderer” and a name given to a 12th century South-Indian religious sect that wandered the land, eschewing the idea of a fixed temple or sacred home-base while welcoming worshipers of all classes and cultures into the fold. In one of his teachings, the founding saint of the Charanas referred to their deity as the “Lord of the meeting rivers.”

Thus, as Sowa Charana—a wandering ayahuasca retreat facilitated by lifelong travelers at locations around the globe—we seek to offer the most authentic experience of the Shipibo healing tradition possible, while at the same time placing it in a modern container that can best serve guests of all backgrounds. As the movable point where the river of ancient Shipibo knowledge meets the diverse cultural rivers that carry our guests to us, ours is a necessarily syncretic modality that, in our many years of experience with hundreds of guests, we’ve seen simply works.

In addition to providing a contemporary context for traditional medicine to effectively treat the illnesses of today, our goal is to help guests fall back into the kind of reciprocal relationship with nature practiced by all of our ancestors. At retreat centers all over the world, we invite guests to build their own relationships of gratitude, respect, and reverence for the natural world, a practice that in and of itself is a path to healing, as well as a powerful and, sadly, largely-forgotten pillar of indigenous wisdom.

We are an ayahuasca retreat with a fluid center. A bridge between the timeless and the timely. A place where rivers meet, and in their meeting, clean, rejuvenate, and heal.

I had drunk Ayahuasca before, but never in a retreat setting. The whole experience at Sowa Charana was almost life-changing, and I will always be deeply grateful for what I lived during those days.
Because of what I was able to see and realize within myself, and because of the support and love of the team at every moment — and the beautiful work of the curanderos, Lidia and Américo.
You can feel from the very first moment that their main intention is to help you and be there for you.
Each ceremony was special and profoundly transformative. I went in without overthinking, and ended up uncovering dark and difficult things I had been carrying for a long time.
To experience that and begin a process of real change in just one week feels truly magical.
Sowa Charana is without a doubt the best place to go through that journey.
    Thank you so much.

The best team hands down. Not only would I trust the curandera/shaman with my life but the facilitators are outstanding. Each member is beautiful, experienced and talented in their own way. A truly individualized experience where you feel supported before, during and after both the ceremonies and the days in between. Aya will work with you regardless of where you choose to go but what makes the real difference is the people there to guide and support you along the way. I’ve done fancy retreats with all the amenities and without a doubt would choose this team time and time again over anything else. It’s not often that the facilitators feel like friends and even more rare when they feel like family after just a couple short weeks. If you’re called to plant medicine, choosing Sowa Charana is 1000% the best choice.

I had an incredible retreat with Sowa Charana, and recommend them to anyone looking for a valuable and transformative ayahuasca experience.

Ben, Britt, Lou, Lydia, and Kevin are all highly experienced facilitators who care passionately about each guest achieving the goals they set out to achieve — both for the retreat and for life afterward.

If you’re looking for a high ratio of facilitators to guests instead of the typical overpacked experience of big-name resort-style retreats, this is your team.

Grateful for all my fellow guests for helping me in my experience as well!

I look forward to my next retreat with Sowa Charana.

    Best decision. Ever.

Sowa Charana are one of the most genuine & loving people I’ve ever met.

I did in total 15 ceremonies with them (some while they were still part of another retreat center) and never witnessed anything but unconditional love & service from all of them. Their devotion is present in every step they take.

Plant medicine ceremonies are no joke and you really want to do it with people you can trust. These are the right people. From the energetic protection of the space to the emotional support, they know what they’re doing. My ceremonies were quite difficult and the way these people supported me was everything. They have been there for me 24/7 — to hold my hand, help me to the bathroom and back, talk or not to talk — whatever was needed. Their mastery lies in being present & supportive while leaving the responsibility for your own process with you. To me, that is the ultimate empowerment.

Every element of their program (yoga, breathwork, meditation, and other practices) is designed to support you during the ceremonies but also in your daily life and so you are leaving with new tools and techniques that you can use for your integration & everyday wellbeing.

There are two integration calls included in the price — one and two/three months after the retreat. I don’t know many centres that do that and I think it is the ultimate proof of how much these people care about you even after the end of the retreat. I had my first integration call with them a couple days ago and it was incredibly helpful with figuring out how to use the insights from the ceremonies in my daily life.

One of the things I appreciate the most is how grounded and down–to–earth they all are. Though they are all very connected to the spiritual realm, they are so very human and relatable and it’s just fun and easy to be around them.

Brit, Ben, Kev and Lou all carry so much wisdom, and the presence of each one of them is a medicine in itself. And Lidia, the currandera, is just pure gold, and embodiment of unconditional love and power. I am SO grateful for meeting these people and choosing to do my ceremonies with them.

I am generally not someone who leaves reviews. However, I understand how challenging it is to find a trustworthy and safe retreat – if you’re someone looking for one, you should know that you have found it and look no further. If you’ve been looking for a sign – this is it.
My entire life I’ve had a really difficult time with letting people help me, with trusting people to be able to help me, with feeling like no one could help me, and the idea of trusting others in general was pretty tough for me as someone with a fairly rich history of abuse trauma (and who’s been through 15 years of various therapeutic modalities and “treatments” – none of which were ever helpful). Against all odds, I put my faith in this group of facilitators, and Lidia, I chose to trust them and let them help me – and I cannot be emphatic enough in saying what a good choice that was to make. This group of humans are on to something really incredible in what they’re doing, and I am in awe of their grace, compassion, wisdom, insight, and integrity with how they approach their work. I say all of this as someone who has worked in the mental health care field for almost 12 years now – no practitioner I have ever met or personally worked with has the ability to help people heal as effectively as this group of people do. Not only are they incredibly kind and loving in the care they provide, but they back up their practices with an extensive knowledge and deep understanding of, respect for, and commitment to the type of work they are doing. So in closing let me say this: if you’re ready to actually “do the work” and you want to do it in a safe container with the most loving, knowledgeable, effective people possible: book a retreat with Sowa Charana. And if that’s not enough encouragement for you I’ll tell you this: I went in to this experience terrified, hating it, thinking it was the worst decision I’d ever made, the worst thing that had ever happened to me, and full of doubts – I came out of it trusting this group of people in a way I didn’t know was even possible, feeling a type of love I didn’t know existed, and telling anyone who would listen that this was by far the BEST (and hardest) experience of my entire life. Give yourself the gift of going to work with them – it’ll be the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself.
